Browser service and installed app: two form factors

Renamed.to is a web service: you open a page, put files in and get renamed files back. Nothing to install, no administrator rights needed, usable on any device with a browser. Filery Rename is a desktop app for macOS and Windows that accesses the file system: you pick a folder, the app reads the PDFs inside and renames them in place. Both routes reach the goal, but they suit different ways of working. If you occasionally tidy up a dozen files, the browser gets you there fast. If you empty an inbox folder every week, you do not want an upload dialog in between.

What speaks for the web route

The browser approach has genuine advantages that we will not talk down. It runs on Linux, on ChromeOS and on machines where you are not allowed to install anything — in many companies that is exactly the deciding point. There is no update maintenance, no IT approval, no questions about code signing and installer packages. And if your documents already live in cloud storage, the detour via the workstation is redundant. If any of those points apply to you, a web service is the more obvious choice, and we would say so.

Where Filery works differently

Filery starts at the file system, not at the upload dialog. You point it at a folder and the app works through it — file by file or as a batch across the whole set. The naming pattern is freely definable, for example Date_Sender_Type, with a configurable date format. Recognised fields such as sender, document date, document type and subject can be arranged in any order. Before each rename you see the suggestion next to the old name and confirm it. A history inside the app records what was renamed. For scanned PDFs without a text layer, OCR can be switched on.

What happens to the content

Precision matters more than marketing here. The PDF is read on your machine, and what is then transmitted is the extracted content, encrypted, for AI analysis. What comes back are the recognised metadata; the renaming happens again on your own device. The files themselves are not stored permanently. There is no analysis without any transmission at all — if you want to route it through your own provider account, that is the Custom plan with your own API keys. How Renamed.to handles uploaded files is set out in its privacy policy and data processing agreement. You are better off reading that there than taking our word for it.

Pricing: why no third-party numbers appear here

Pricing models change, and a comparison page quoting the other side's outdated figures is worse than none. So we only state our own: the Starter plan covers 50 documents per month, free and without signup. Business costs 30 € per month and covers 500 documents. Custom is 5 € per month, and the AI usage is then billed through your own API keys directly with the respective provider. Please check the current Renamed.to tariff on their site — and convert it to your actual monthly volume rather than to the list price per file.

When Renamed.to is the better choice

Three situations speak clearly against us. First: you work on a device where you cannot or may not install software. Second: your documents already sit in cloud storage, and a service that starts there saves you the detour via the workstation. Third: you need this once, for one finished pile, and do not want to set anything up for it. In all three cases an installed tool is the clumsier route, even when the installed tool is ours.

Yes. Both work with ordinary PDF files and leave no proprietary format behind. Moving in either direction therefore needs no migration — you simply point at the same folder or upload the same files.

Yes. For the analysis, the extracted content is transmitted encrypted, and the recognised metadata comes back. Without a connection the app cannot produce suggestions. If you would rather route the analysis through your own API keys, that is what the Custom plan is for.

Filery is installed and configured per workstation; there is no central distribution of naming patterns through a management console. If several people should work to the same pattern, define it once and set it up identically at each workstation.

Filery changes the filename, not the storage location, so your existing folder structure stays as it is. If you want to reorganise anyway, do that before the renaming run so you can work through folder by folder cleanly.
